About me
Maxfield Joyner
I was born in Florida but moved to Virginia when I was about five. At nine, my family relocated to Portland, and I’ve considered the Pacific Northwest my home ever since. I attended Montessori preschool, followed by public and private schools until midway through fourth grade, when my parents decided to homeschool me due to ongoing challenges. That decision proved transformative: I was fortunate to attend Village Home, a resource center for homeschool families, where I was able to thrive. While at Village Home, I participated in Mock Trial, Model UN, and Ethics Bowl. At age 15, I began dual enrollment at Portland Community College, completing both my high school diploma and an associate’s degree by age 17. From there, I attended the University of Oregon, and was active in the College Democrats chapter, graduating in June 2024, cum laude, and with departmental honors.
After graduation, I became a Fellow in the Northwest Oregon Legislative Fellowship under Oregon House Majority Leader Ben Bowman. The fellowship combined weekend canvassing in competitive legislative races with classroom work taught by current and former elected officials and staffers. In groups, we developed policy proposals and presented them before a mock committee of Oregon legislators at the State Capitol. My team’s proposal focused on creating state partnerships with nonprofits that operate transitional housing villages for unhoused individuals.
As the fellowship concluded, I became a District Intern for Congresswoman Andrea Salinas, followed by an internship with Senator Jeff Merkley. This past summer, I was selected as a scholar in Representative Jamie Raskin’s Democracy Summer program, which prepares the next generation of Democratic leaders and organizers. Most recently, I joined the Washington County Young Democrats Caucus and now serve as Outreach Director, where I co-lead recruitment efforts.
Driven by my passion for history and politics, and in preparation for law school, I closely follow a wide range of media outlets, read extensively about current affairs, and seek out resources that deepen my understanding of the past and its connection to the present.
Alongside my academic and political pursuits, I have a strong creative side. I enjoy writing fiction and am developing both a novel and a comic book. For the past seven years, I have been part of the development team for an alternative history video game modification. For this we collaborate on a wide range of geopolitical issues regarding the world as we know it, but with twists and turns as people and events, re-imagining how things would be if things had unfolded differently.
