How I Can Help You

I enjoy working with students from middle school through high school, and adults who want to deepen their knowledge and understanding of history.

While my focus is history, social studies, and political science, I can also help with writing, both creative and academic.   Let’s have a chat to see what you need and whether or not I’m a good fit!

As a Tutor

If you have current curriculum that you are struggling to grasp, I can help you.   We will have an in-depth discussion ahead of time, plus you will send me whatever materials you have.  This will give me a chance to review them, familiarize myself, and customize our tutoring sessions to best help you.

It’s also helpful to get a sense of how, why, or where you’re struggling (if you know), and what you think you need to move forward.

As a Teacher

I have a number of classes that I offer that seek to teach elements of history not typically discussed in a traditional schooling settings.  Here are three examples:

  • Holistic History – This class connects the dots between historical events and movements across the globe so students are left understanding how events connect both in the past and the present day.
  • Standing Up – Here we examine important social and political movements in American history from the Abolitionist movement at the start of the 19th Century through the modern day.
  • The Other Guys – Not all of history is written by the winners. In this class we explore the losers, runner-ups, and the “also-rans” of American political history.

My History Specialties:

While I’m delighted to teach any type of history, I’m listing my favorites below. If I don’t feel that my knowledge base is strong enough to help, I will tell you. However, I’d be more inclined to fill in the gaps in my own knowledge (which is always fun) and then be better equipped to teach or tutor.

American Politics

From the events leading up to the founding of the USA, through today’s news, I will help you connect the dots to find all of this information fun, engaging, and relevant.

Late 19TH CENTURY

I will help you explore and connect to Asian, African, European, and American history.  If you’re interested in South or Central American history, I’d be happy to brush up on that!   (I do love the Incas!)

20th century

Things that happened across the globe in the last 100+ years are relevant to today, from technology to politics.  I will help you broaden your view and see the connections, bringing the past more alive and easier to understand.

HISTORICAL “WHAT-IFS”

I find that a great way to connect with history it to play a game of “what if” regarding famous people an events.  What would the world be like if a specific person did NOT rise to prominence?  What if a specific event never happened?  This creative approach makes connecting all of history more fun and engaging.
